A lot of nonsense was talked by many HR leaders during COVID Lockdown about the end of offices and permanent massive shift to working at home. Just as a lot of other nonsense was talked about how millions of people would never go to a physical food shop again, having got used to ordering online.

At first sight 100% virtual working looked great: less cost, less commuting time and so on. But then the problems gradually became more obvious - just as I had predicted many times. The fact is that most companies that tolerate 80-100% home working for most of their teams will lose out to competitors in the longer term.

Senior executives who actually get on the plane and turn up at a potential client's office, take them out to dinner and so on, are FAR more likely to close their first big deal than their main competitor who wants to save on air fare and travel time and just do a sales pitch on Teams. Especially in emerging markets like Middle East or Asia...

And in the meantime, expect those working from home to be particularly at risk from AI / Artificial Intelligence systems.

Life Beyond COVID - millions of people are rethinking their own personal futures, what is important to them, careers, relationships and so on.

Seven years ago, as a pair of empty-nesters, Sheila and I embarked on a somewhat impulsive sailing odyssey, after more than three decades living in the same part of London. We were both very fulfilled, but exhausted.

Everyone wants to be happy – most advertisers try to persuade us that the secret of happiness is the next thing we will buy. But we know that long lasting happiness usually depends on many deeper things: friendship, strong family relationships, good health, personal fulfilment and so on.

It is hard to be happy if you have many worries about money, too little or too much. In fact great wealth brings many pressures of its own. Happynomics is about the economics of happiness. Contentment can be measured not only in individuals but also in communities, or indeed across entire nations, looking at a national sense of well-being.

On a national level, Happynomics surveys show that happyness is enhanced to varying degrees by wealth, education, peaceful government and trust, but weakened by things like corruption, insecurity and unemployment. Happiness is a dominant concept in marketing, customer loyalty, product design and workplace motivation.
