I WAS RECENTLY in Saudi Arabia, speaking at a vast forum on the future of cities using smart solutions. The Kingdom is planning a new city the size of Belgium, just one part of a monumental vision to create homes for 10 million more people.

Their event drew over 200,000. In many of the exhibition areas there were displays created using AI, which is shaping every aspect of their city designs, infrastructure developments and day-to-day operations.

The exhibition area was packed with huge models of urban areas, up to 12 metres wide by 15 metres long. Each home, road, car, office, hospital and factory was reproduced on a tiny scale.

AI is creating digital models that will operate like Google Earth. Viewers will ‘fly’ over concept cities from any height, or dive down to the level of an individual building, walk virtually through front doors, enjoy 360-degree views of each room.

AI to plan infrastructure and city layouts

Some of the most important parts of all city plans are how power and water will be delivered, how people will move around, and where central services will be, such as hospitals, schools, stations, airports and shopping malls.

The extraordinary thing about AI is the detail in which any idea can be rendered. I have sat on the board of a global construction company which won a contract in Latin America to build over 100 hospitals and schools. AI was used to some extent in planning, just a foretaste of what is to come.

I have visited huge building projects such as the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station in London, and it is still true that human beings are responsible directly for almost every aspect of what happens. Some of that will change over the next five years, mainly in design, quantity surveying, systems control, quality control, logistics and supply chain management.
